Toy Cameras

Having minored in photography in art school, I have a strong appreciation for all traditional forms of the art. At one point in my career I was working in a professional photography studio working with the lovely Hasselblad camera (one of my favorite cameras ever!) and a large format with expensive digital backs. At this point I thought I was going to get into photography more than illustration. I also had the privilege to work with amazing people passionate about what they were doing as well as having one of the best art instructors ever. This all helped fuel my knowledge for the craft. Unfortunately, the photographer I worked under is no more after the company cut out their entire design department and digital has taken over. I am also still in mourning after finding out Polaroid is closing the doors. What is going on?

Both Drew and I have Polaroid cameras and absolutely love taking them around with us in the summer. Now we have to be more frugal with our film! I have two Holgas and love my Holga! I just haven’t been bringing her out very much. The film can be expensive to develop and I am a complete control freak when it comes to photography. I want ultimate control over everything, probably due to all those long hours in the dark room. Here are some older photos of a building they ended up demolishing on the south side of Chicago.

Drew and I are planning a trip to the Grand Canyon in October and I definitely want to bring the Polaroid and perhaps look into getting a Diana . I love the result of color film with the Diana and the Southwest is definitely a color film type of place. Plus we are planning on stopping in a lot of quirky places on our trip, so the timeless vintage look of the film will be perfect.

Ain’t she just the prettiest lil’ thing?

This will be the summer I bring out Miss Holga!
